I see the ‘financial experts’ are
forecasting a financial drama somewhere between a world recession and an
economic slowdown.  Mind you,  X is an unknown quantity and a spurt is a
drip under pressure!

Talking of drips, I have a friend who has just bought a proper motor
car. No, he is not the drip; his motor car has one or two. Part of the problem
is that he has placed a large piece of cardboard under the car and it is
amazing (and worrying to a beginner) how far one or two drops of oil will
spread on such a surface. The engine oil level seems to be behaving itself, so there
must be a leak, but tracking down the source is almost impossible. ‘Rivers,
like weak men, become crooked following the line of least resistance’. Who
mentioned financiers? My adage is “If it doesn’t drip, it’s empty”, but this seems
to have no effect on him.

Well I gave up trying to reassure him. Men do not make good counsellors
anyway. I am reminded of the lady whose car engine stopped suddenly only half a
mile from home. She tried many things, but eventually walked home to seek her
husband’s assistance as he had the day off. To her horror she found him in bed
with the neighbour’s wife. Tearfully she rang a counsellor - a man - and explained
what had happened. “What should I do” she asked.  “Well, once is not that serious ….” he
replied, “…. but, if it happens again, leave the engine to cool and push in the
clutch when you turn the starter……”.
