I got caught by one of those damn speed
traps recently. I was just ambling along, in no hurry to get anywhere and I saw
the camera van. Looked down at the speedo to check - whoops, going a little
fast, so slowed down. Too late! 35mph in a 30mph zone and a fine of £60 with 3
points on my licence which has been blameless for nearly 50 years. Whatever
happened to mens rae? I obviously
had the means, but in no way was I intending to break the law. Yet I am
constantly passed by motorists obviously in a hurry and quite deliberately
going at way over whatever the speed limit might be. Of course there is
not a copper or a camera in sight. Probably that’s why those drivers feel free
to drive at such dangerous speeds.
I
wish I could believe that these cameras were there for more than just revenue.
What about this for an idea? The purchase
and operating costs of the cameras must be known. Why not limit the ‘income’ to
that amount and give the rest to charity - perhaps one that supports the
victims of speeding motorists? Then people might actually believe that the
cameras are not just there to supplement the budget of whatever council or
police force is running them.
