12 December 2015

Whenever I am asked how much my car is worth, I am reminded of the author who, at a book-signing session, wrote in one lady’s book “To Emma Chissit”. Well actually she was Australian and thought she had to pay!  I am also reminded of the late Alan Clark’s response to such a question - “I am never going to sell it, so it doesn’t matter how much it is worth”. Quite right. He said this during that fantastic 1993 Alpine tour, when his Ghost (and the other 44) proved that these cars really are meant for driving - and by golly did he drive his!  After the rally he showed me one of the pistons from his car. The crown was decidedly cooked !!
In the absence of any other excuse, I often go shopping in mine. To friends who express concern at possible vandalism, my answer is that I invariably find at least one person admiring the car when I return to it, sometimes several. Vandals do not usually carry out their nasty work with possible witnesses on hand. I am glad to say that my confidence has so far been well founded and I don’t mind at all answering questions (I use Alan’s response when asked the value). Quite a few tell me the badge changed to black when Royce died; most want to be horrified by the petrol consumption; and occasionally someone gets the model and the year spot on.
I love the reaction when I open the bonnet for the odd interested chap (ladies never ask to see the engine).
It is quite a lump isn’t it!
