I don’t know about you, but I find it
rather difficult to steer at the same time as keeping a map or set of
directions under control in an open car. Things get worse as the evening draws
in, the temperature drops and I have to hold a torch as well !  Add a little precipitation and the whole
thing becomes impossible.

My human navigator is not a great fan of long
journeys in an open car, especially when the temperature drops and the
precipitation starts etc. So I got myself a lady in a box. Do you remember the
song ‘I’m going to buy a paper doll’?
Well this is something similar.
She is well spoken, entirely devoted to
my welfare, very patient, never complains and I can switch her off at any time!
Having such a diligent minder means that travelling alone is easier and, when
accompanied, my wife can enjoy the scenery and avoid feeling queasy trying to
read maps on twisty roads.

So Miranda (as I have called her because we go mirandering around the
countryside together) is quite an asset. I have to admit that I get some funny
looks when I start talking back to her when I am driving alone, especially if I
address her as ‘sweetie’. She never replies though, except to advise me to turn
left, or right, or to turn around at the next opportunity as I have missed a
turning.  If only she could undo the
thermos, or pass me peppermints or remind me to turn on the petrol.
A presto
