I
cannot understand owners who ‘lay up’ their cars for the winter - well not in
this country anyway. I fret if I do not get my regular fix of proper motoring.
Remember the verse from that excellent poem which read “I drive a 40-50 car; It goes at quite a pace; Top folded away any
reasonable day; And I drive with a smile
on my face”?
Yes it does get a bit nippy for exposed
parts, but there need not be too many of those and anyway current wisdom states
that cold extremities cause one’s brown fat to produce heat, burning off excess
weight.
The
car will need washing more often, but there is nothing wrong with that. And
problems do come to light more often when the car is used, rather than
mouldering in a garage. I took mine out one
day and on the way home I thought it sounded rather sporty. After a mile or two
it began to sound rather more agricultural.
It didn’t take a mechanical genius to decide that something was amiss
with the exhaust and so it transpired. A joint flange had detached itself just
aft of the big silencer. To get it properly welded (it is stainless steel), I
had to remove the silencer and tail pipe from the car - not a big deal,
although the silencer is quite heavy! The only trouble I am having is stopping
myself saying ‘Well while that is off and at the welders I might as well do
this …. and that … oh and there is that…..’
So ironically, the car will be ’laid up’ for a while, but a short
while I assure you.
