Have
you ever wondered what the Mona Lisa was smiling at?
It has been called an enigmatic
smile so often, that I looked it up in the dictionary (that is I refreshed my memory). It
means mysterious and therein lies a clue. You all know of course that those
Rolls-Royce motor cars that do have names (as opposed to those awful numbers), are
associated with the mysterious - Spirits, Ghosts, Shadows etc. Indeed there was
once a serious intention to call a new model the ‘Silver Mist', until someone
pointed out what ‘mist’ meant in German!
So my theory is that Mona Lisa had driven
to da Vinci's studio (driven not ridden) in a Rolls-Royce. Now my O-level in
history - more of a scrape through than a pass - tells me that it must have
been a Silver Ghost or the like. I mean,
take a look at anyone driving such a car and what do you invariably see? A big smile of course. Indeed if you watch the faces of passers-by
you will see them smiling also. Well of course Leonardo couldn't have the gal
sitting there with a big grin on her face, so he obviously told her to sober
up. Well as you all know, it takes more than a bollocking from a master painter
to take away the after-glow of driving a proper motorcar. She nearly made it (a straight face I mean),
but thank heaven she didn't!
